Barcelona Surf Community Stronger Than Ever
 |
March 7, 2008 For over three years Barcelona's surf community has been the leading opposition group against the city's proposal to armor the last stretch of natural coastline, which will bury the last of Barcelona's waves. The plight to save the surf and its environment from destruction has been lead by the Catalan Surfing Association, which has dedicated hours of volunteer work, including; protests, bureaucratic processes, international outreach and media coverage. Because of A.C.S.'s (Catalan Surfing Association) leadership and huge network of supporters the project hasn't been approved by Barcelona's governmental agencies. Felip Niegrá, an A.C.S. member, spoke about why he has been so persistent over the years, "We are here because we want to keep our surf recreational zones untouched and we don't want this project to turn our ocean into a lifeless sea with no waves, like what happen after the armament project was finished in Barcelonesa. We represent the people of the region who will soon suffer the consequences of this project's negligence. As soon as the project is done thousands of residents and tourist will be robbed of the health and peace of mind that surfing brings to them everyday." A.C.S. will be holding another manifestation on April 27, 2008. For more information please watch A.C.S.'s video and visit their website at acsurf.org.
