Re: Opposition to Development Proposal of San Miguel Marina
Dear Mexican Government Officials:
As one of numerous concerned ocean enthusiasts, I strongly oppose the development proposal called “Marina de San Miguel” in northern Ensenada. I request that you also show concern for your national economy due to the devastating impact that this Marina will have on the marine ecotourism that comes to your area, due especially to the damage it will inflict on San Miguel’s waves and ocean flora.
The proposed Marina is sure to alter the world famous San Miguel surf break which draws millions of dollars to your country annually by hosting many international and national surf contests. Additionally, the Marina would also most likely close off access to one of the last remaining public beaches in the north side of the Ensenada Bay. The people of Mexico should not have another beach taken from them and given to wealthy landowners. The area north of Ensenada is already highly developed, and the harbors in Ensenada already have sufficient space for boats, hence we believe this project is not only unnecessary, but will actually harm the local economy.
The San Miguel Marina proposes to build a break water out from the San Miguel jetty that would engulf the rest of the surf breaks down the coast. Furthermore, the Marina would recklessly take 76 hectares away from the sea, replacing it with 550 yachts that will add to the water pollution. This will not be good for Mexico on a national economic level, and not good for Mexico in regards to its international reputation for environmental responsibility.
I encourage and strongly request that your agency become involved to oppose this development proposal, due to the detrimental impact that it will have on Mexico’s economy, tourism, environment, international reputation and culture. Your support is necessary for the future prosperity of Northern Baja, and to preserve one of the last remaining public beaches in Ensenada.
Best Regards,
