Re: Support for Abandonment of Cruise Ship Terminal and Opposition to Super-Yacht Project
Dear Project Director John Blumke:
Thank you very much for your recent abandonment of the cruise ship terminal component of the Gold Coast Marine Development Project (the Notional Seaway Project) due to the findings of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which indicated more than just being “not economically viable [with] some navigation issues.” Clearly, the cruise ship project would have had a lasting destructive ecological impact on the South Stradbroke location due to the ongoing dredging which would have inevitably accompanied the project as well as all the underwater pipelines and "management" provisions for drinking water, wastewater and refueling of cruise and military vessels.
However, it is with this same concern for preserving the existing ecology, that I write in earnest opposition to the construction of a marina facility for super yachts, recreational and commercial vessels. I am concerned about the remaining marina elements of the Gold Coast Marine Development Project because, unlike the recent position of the Queensland government, I do not believe the super yacht project has merit and therefore should not be progressed.
The super yacht component of the project would eradicate a natural site, as opposed to developing the area adjacent to a large number of existing marina berths. Thus, in the face of an alternative, the project would choose to destroy the natural coastal environment and this natural habitat would be lost. The super yacht project would require costly ongoing dredging to accommodate the 350 very large yachts, which in turn will impact the natural marine flora and habitat for wildlife. Additionally, the completed super yacht development will certainly accommodate these 350 yachts to produce and inevitably emit pollutants into the South Stradbroke waters, and even more discharges from the proposed commercial facilities built for water, sewage and fuel provisions.
Therefore, the super yacht project will undeniably create ecological degradation and pollutant discharges into the waters which will impact adjacent sea-grass beds, swimmers, surfers and marine wildlife. For the above reasons, we request that you abandon the super yacht project.

Dear Honourable Paul Lucas:
Email 3 This email will be sent to the Notional Seaway EIS Project Team (notionalseawayproject@ghd.com.au)
Notional Seaway EIS Project Team GPO Box 668 Brisbane Qld 4001 Australia
Dear Notional Seaway EIS Project Team:
I understand that you have been appointed by The Coordinator-General of Queensland to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Notional Seaway Project at The Spit (Gold Coast).
As you know, your objectives of the EIS (as set out in the final Terms of Reference) include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) To comprehensively identify and evaluate all relevant issues associated with the proposal, 2) To identify all potential environmental, cultural, social, transport and land use planning impacts of the preferred concept…to minimise or compensate for adverse impacts, and 3) To consult with the community and relevant stakeholders in the process of identifying, assessing and responding to the impacts of the proposal. For these reasons, I give you my opinion as a member of the community, and as a stakeholder, the adverse environmental, cultural and social impact that the marine super yacht proposal would have on future generations to come as well as the existing ecology.
In the spirit of your posted Environmental Contribution “pledge to minimise our environmental footprint” and Environmental Management System (EMS) aims “to protect the environment from the potential impacts that may result from our office activities and from the projects we deliver,” we request that you include in your completed EIS on the super yacht project that many interested parties oppose this project because the super yacht component of the project would eradicate a natural site, as opposed to developing the area adjacent to a large number of existing marina berths.
Therefore, the super yacht project will undeniably create ecological degradation and pollutant discharges into the waters, which will impact adjacent sea-grass beds, swimmers, surfers and marine wildlife. Your opinion is very important and I strongly request that your completed EIS on the super yacht project reflects this undesirable and strongly opposed social, cultural and environmental impact.
