San Francisco, CA – Life Is A Wave, the annual fundraiser hosted by Save The Waves Coalition, once again rolled into downtown San Francisco last Friday, June 10th. The event, which has become an annual tradition converging environmentalism with surf culture, music, art, and heritage, raised $45,000 for Save The Waves’ environmental programs, to further protect and preserve surfing coastline around the world.
Nell Newman, founder of Newman’s Own Organics and longtime Save The Waves supporter, was presented with the 2011 Wave Saver Award. “I’m honored to be a part of Save The Waves’ mission to protect surfing areas around the world,” said Newman. “It’s important to me, as a surfer and someone who loves the outdoors, that we continue to cherish and protect these special places.”
Life Is A Wave 2011 also showcased the growing World Surfing Reserves initiative, which just days before the event launched a new website at http://www.worldsurfingreserves.org, and has several new sites slated for WSR dedication, including Santa Cruz, Ericeira, and Manly Beach.
“Every year we feel so fortunate to be able to put on an event like this for the community,” said Save The Waves Executive Director Dean LaTourrette. “We’re honored to have people generously support the cause, but we also believe strongly in bringing people together around the fight to protect our coastal environment.”
Life Is A Wave 2011 featured live music from Bayonics, as well as sets by DJ C Funk, and Skullcandy ambassador DJs.
Save The Waves sends an enthusiastic thanks to all those who donated to the auction and attended the event, as well as Life Is A Wave 2010 event sponsors, including Billabong, Skullcandy, Jim Beam, Clif Bar, Patagonia, Quiksilver Foundation, RVCA, Surfline, Gordon Biersch, Longboard Vineyards, Peligroso Tequila, and Zola.
