Threatened Wave: Surfer's Beach, Half Moon Bay, California

The Pillar Point harbor just inside of iconic Maverick's in Half Moon Bay is filling up with sand, creating a nuisance for boaters and causing major erosion at nearby beaches that are starved of sand. Surfer's Beach is at risk of disappearing.

Save The Waves advocates the dredging of the harbor, with the fill being disposed over the breakwater wall onto Surfer's Beach where it will re-nourish starved beaches, creating better surf conditions and protecting the coastline.

Over the years, the US Army Corps of Engineer's outer breakwater at Pillar Point Harbor has caused scouring and loss of beach at a popular public beach and surf spot called Surfer's Beach, located just outside the breakwater within the Half Moon Bay city limits. The breakwater obstructs the natural littoral flow of runoff sediment to the beach, forcing the erosion of several miles of sandy beaches where surfers and fishermen practice sport.  Homeowners and businesses are also threatened by the ereoding beach, at least one state park is losing its beach, and Highway One must be protected by dumping artificial fill to avoid its untimely erosion into the ocean at Surfer's Beach.

Save The Waves is now working closely with the local Dredge the Harbor campaign based in Half Moon Bay that is spearheaded by surfers and boaters, as well as with the Gulf of the Farallones and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuaries, to encourage streamlining of the complicated process involved with disposing of dredge materials within a national marine sanctuary.

Prelimininary private studies have already been conducted, proving that the sediment quality and size exceeds Corps of Engineers requirements for dredge disposal. The next step is an environmental study of the quality of the sediment and any contaminants that may be present.
