A Message From Our CEO : 2023 Reflections

Another year of wins and progress,

To our Coalition and community,

At Save The Waves Coalition, we’re not just protecting amazing surf breaks and waves – we’re preserving whole surf ecosystems to improve the health and resilience of coastlines all over the world. And we’re not doing it alone: everything we do is in partnership with local communities.

Working together as a Coalition we achieved so much last year:

  • Dedicated North Devon as the first World Surfing Reserve in the UK, safeguarding over 8 diverse surf breaks and 30 km of coastline.
  • Supported the declaration of a 15-hectare coastal park in Ericeira, Portugal, including bluff restoration around Ribeira d’Ilhas
  • Stewarded new water quality and watershed restoration projects at Guarda do Embaú, Brazil and Playa Hermosa, Costa Rica.
  • Piloted a new model of climate insurance in Las Flores, El Salvador for the surf breaks, mangroves and nearby communities.
  • Advocated for the legendary Puerto Escondido, supporting local efforts with a global campaign to protect sand flow and water quality.
  • Defended Punta Conejo in Oaxaca, building a plan for a protected area, including 1000 hectares of mangroves, that will oppose an industrial port expansion.

Thanks to your support, these wins and strides for our global coastlines were possible.

2023 was also a true inflection point for Save The Waves.

We celebrated our organization’s 20th anniversary and hosted our first ever “Coalition Summit”. Partners from across the globe gathered in Northern California for a weekend of learning, sharing and Coalition-building.

Our team used this opportunity to plan our next three years and we developed two really big goals we want to share with you:

  1. We will expand to 15 World Surfing Reserves to protect 150 surf ecosystems by 2026.
  2. We will establish 10 Surf Protected Areas in priority regions with conservation benefits for both sustainable surfing and biodiversity protection by 2026.

As we close out our 20th anniversary, we’re committing to these milestones which will ultimately protect over 300 waves in the next three years.

Will you join our efforts to protect these critical surf ecosystems?

You can help and it’s easy: become a Coalition Member today! Your Coalition Membership will provide year-long support with generations of impact. Make a difference and help protect the places you love.

Thank you for your continued support and happy holidays!

With respect,

Nik Strong-Cvetich
