Annual Coastal Cleanup in the Santa Cruz World Surfing Reserve

ACC_2014_main

On September 20th, Save The Waves played a role in the CA Coastal Commission’s 30th Annual Coastal Cleanup Day as the captains for the Seabright Beach clean up site. Known as the largest volunteer event on the planet, STW rallied a group of 75 volunteers to remove trash and recyclables from within the Santa Cruz WSR.  After four hours volunteers had collected 75 pounds of trash and 11 pounds of recycling from entering the Monterey Bay.

Save The Waves chose to lead the cleanup at Seabright Beach because it was recently identified as a marine debris ‘hot spot’ within the WSR. STW has committed to ongoing beach clean ups efforts along Seabright, Main, and Cowell’s Beaches as part of its broader efforts alongside WSR partners to address threats like water quality problems within the  Reserve boundaries.

A huge thanks to all of the volunteers who pitched in and helped keep the Santa
Cruz WSR clean!
