Step 2: Use the app’s simple submission steps: take a photo, select a threat category, tag your location and submit. 

That’s it! All app posts submitted from September 15th to November 15th will be considered.

What’s the Challenge?

Save The Waves hosts the Dirty Wave Challenge biannually through our globally available mobile app.

When is it?

The Challenge is open for two months from September 15th and closes November 15th.

Can I keep $5,000 in cash for myself?

The Dirty Wave Challenge is an open invitation for users to give back to their community spaces. The $5,000 Stewardship Grant must be used towards a stewardship project to help improve the surf ecosystem submitted via the app. 

am I responsible for cleaning the beach on my own?

Save The Waves is a Coalition. We do everything in collaboration in pursuit of protected coastlines. If you are an individual who wins the $5,000 Stewardship Grant, we’ll work with you to identify a local organization or cause where the funds can have the best possible impact.

  1. Eligibility: Anyone who posts on the Save The Waves app during the contest time frame


  2. Sponsor: Save The Waves is the sponsor of this contest. 


  3. Agreement to Rules: By entering this contest, you agree to these rules.


  4. DWC Entry Period: The period starts on September 15, 2021 at 12:00 am PST through November 15, 2021 at 11:59pm PST. The winner will be notified the following week after the contest closes.


  5. How to Enter: Report a threat to your local surf spot or coastline, organize your community/organization to report the same threat, and get the chance to win a $5000 stewardship project along Save The Waves to work on solving this issue


  6. Prize: $5,000 stewardship prize for the 1st place winner. Five (5) runner-ups will be chosen for one (1) $100 gift certificate to Klean Kanteen each.


  7. Odds: The odds of selection are based on the number of eligible submissions posted.


  8. Selection and Notification of Winner: STW will consider all submissions within the Contest Entry Period and select the winner based on threat urgency, project viability, and demonstrated community support. If the chosen winner does not meet all the requirements for participation or violates any of the terms for submission, STW has the full right to disqualify the winner and all privileges of the winner will be terminated.


  9. Rights Granted by You: By submitting an entry (e.g., text, video, photo, etc.) into this Save The Waves Coalition Dirty Wave Challenge, You understand and agree that the Sponsor, any individual acting on the Sponsor’s behalf, and the licensees successors, and assigns of the Sponsor shall, where permitted by law, have the right to print, publish, broadcast, distribute and use in any media known now or hereafter developed, in perpetuity, worldwide, and without limitation, your submission, name, photo, portrait, voice, likeness, image, statements about the Save The Waves Coalition Dirty Wave Challenge, and your biographical information for news, publicity, advertising, promotional purposes, information, and public relations without any further notice, review, consent, compensation, or remuneration.Reference the Terms & Conditions posted on website.

    Any Contributions you transmit may be treated in accordance with the Site Privacy Policy. When you create or make available any Contributions, you thereby represent and warrant that:


  • The creation, distribution, transmission, public display, or performance, and the accessing, downloading, or copying of your Contributions do not and will not infringe the proprietary rights, including but not limited to the copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or moral rights of any third party.
  • You are the creator and owner of or have the necessary licenses, rights, consents, releases, and permissions to use and to authorize us, the Site, and other users of the Site to use your Contributions in any manner contemplated by the Site and these Terms of Use.
