Exciting news from our partners at the Blue Azores: the Autonomous Region of the Azores has passed groundbreaking legislation designating the largest marine protected area network in the North Atlantic.

“This decision will safeguard 30% of waters surrounding the 9 islands of the Azores, which are home to deep-sea corals, whales, dolphins, sharks, manta rays, fish, and unique hydrothermal vent ecosystems,” said the Blue Azores program.

“This has been a science-based and highly participatory process designed to benefit people, nature, and the economy. The Azores’ leadership in protecting their marine environment serves as an example to the world which will ensure a healthy ocean for future generations.”

Save The Waves is so thrilled and honored to partner on the Blue Azores program alongside the Regional Government of the Azores, Waitt Institute and Oceano Azul to further protect the beauty of these islands. Through these combined efforts, Save The Waves is working to bring Azorean surf communities into this conservation effort to better protect surf ecosystems.
