Save The Waves wins support of the Rivian Foundation to protect surf ecosystems in California and beyond

(September 27, 2024, New York City) Save The Waves Coalition is proud to announce it is one of the inaugural grantees of the Rivian Foundation, which launched a website during Climate Week showcasing the first 42 organizations that will collectively receive about $10 million in funding.

The grant to Save The Waves of $160,000 over two years will help the organization to scale up its approach to creating new conservation areas around California’s iconic surf ecosystems.

This includes outreach and engagement efforts, such as the relaunch of the Save The Waves Film Festival, and efforts to improve inclusion of stakeholders in the policy development process for the legal protection of surf areas. It is also helping the organization develop tools for staff, Coalition partners, and local advocates, including a conservation index of California surf breaks.

“Rivian Foundation’s support to help us protect surf ecosystems goes beyond the wave. It will help preserve coastal habitats, provide refuge for endemic species, and safeguard local communities who depend on the surfing economy for their livelihoods,” said Nik Strong-Cvetich, CEO of Save The Waves.

“Our model of local-to-global partnership in California and beyond is forging a more resilient future against climate change – and spreading stoke while we make a difference through tools like our film festival.”
