Looking back at 2025, it’s clearer than ever that protecting surf ecosystems has never been more urgent, or more important. Coastlines are under pressure from climate change, regulations are disappearing, and communities are being pushed to the edge.
Even if it’s been a while since we last connected, I want you to know that your support has mattered. You only have to glance at our *2025 Impact to know that action, community, and efforts make a difference. You’ve been part of these efforts – whether you’ve donated, bought merch, or attended an event – and that momentum continues because of you.
I have a deep sense of gratitude for the people who make up this movement. When our global partners and community members gathered in Santa Cruz this October, many shared how meaningful it was to feel part of something larger. That enthusiasm and spirit truly highlights the value of surf ecosystems and how far we’ve come together.

Innovative Study, California Aspirations
What: Our groundbreaking report, “Climate Vulnerability Of California’s Natural Surfing Capital”, is the first of its kind: combining Surfonomics and surf break vulnerability to sea level rise. Research found the economic value of surfing in Santa Cruz, CA is over $194 million.
Why: This report proves the value of waves as a natural resource worth protecting. We’re advocating for surf ecosystems in Santa Cruz and pushing for statewide Surf Reserves in 2026.
Ultimate Guide to protect surf ecosystems
What: What: “Guidelines and Best Practices for Surf Ecosystem Conservation,” is the most comprehensive resource of its kind, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF). The 200+ page document includes 30 case studies from 25+ surf breaks across 15+ countries, created with our partners at Conservation International and SPDA.
Why: The guide is now the leading playbook on how to protect surf ecosystems, and is publicly available as a learning tool to local communities looking to preserve their home breaks.
